Ford Figo Cross India launch on Jan 31, more details revealed

Ford will launch a crossover version of the Ford Figo hatchback on January 31, 2018. This new model will be introduced to compete with hatch-cross models like the Hyundai i20 Active, Toyota Liva Cross and Honda WR-V. Though no official announcement has yet been made, the Figo crossover is expected to be named as the Ford Freestyle.

The 2018 Ford Figo Cross was earlier spotted testing in India under heavy camouflage. This new cross hatch will essentially be based on the upcoming Figo facelift, which is expected to be launched sometime in 2018. In addition to all design changes that are expected to be seen on the regular model, the Figo Cross will also get slightly higher ground clearance, a new set of alloy wheels, and subtle body cladding.

In terms of specifications, the Figo cross gets a new 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that is a part of Ford’s new Dragon engine series. This engine is capable of developing 94 bhp and 115 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties will be handled by a fresh 5-speed gearbox from Getrag, replacing the ageing IB5 unit of the regular Figo. The company has also used new suspension and braking components to enhance the fun-to-drive factor of the Figo Cross, in comparison with the regular hatchback.

Features on offer with the Ford Figo Freestyle will include a 6.0-inch conventional touchscreen system on the lower variants and the larger 8.0-inch touchscreen with Ford Sync3 for the top-end trim. These two infotainment systems will be similar to what is seen in the facelifted EcoSport. Moreover, the Ford Figo Cross Freestyle will also get 6 airbags, ABS and ESP on the top-end variants.

Not much is known about the India-spec Ford Figo Cross yet. However, we know that it will be placed to fill the gap between the regular Ford Figo and the EcoSport. While most other manufacturers offer either a cross hatch or a sub 4-metre SUV to attract the Indian buyers, Ford will likely be the first to offer products in both these segments. However, Maruti Suzuki too will join it soon, as the company is prepping to launch a crossover version of the Celerio in India in the near future.
