Hyundai Verna 1.4-litre petrol priced from Rs 7.80 lakh

Hyundai India has launched a new engine option for the Verna sedan. This is a 1.4-litre petrol engine that is available with a manual gearbox. The new Hyundai Verna 1.4-litre petrol model range starts from a price point of Rs 7.80 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). This will make it around Rs 1,90,000 cheaper than the lowest 1.6-litre petrol variant. The lower price point will help Hyundai to attract more customers to its portfolio.

It is worth noting that the company has now discontinued the base E and EX variants of the 1.6-litre petrol engine with a manual gearbox.

Hyundai had launched the new-gen Verna in India last year. The car was widely appreciated and also became the Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY) 2017. While the company loaded various new features to the updated model, it strangely discontinued the 1.4-litre petrol and diesel engines from the lineup. As a result, the new Verna was only launched with 1.6-litre petrol and diesel powerplants.

Due to this elimination of the smaller engines, the starting price point of the Verna range was much higher than that of its immediate rivals. As a result, Hyundai India decided to bring back the 1.4-litre petrol engine for the new Verna 2018. The engine in question is a 1.4-litre, four-cylinder VTVT unit that is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and develops 99 bhp and 134 Nm of peak torque. The Verna 1.4 petrol is claimed to deliver a fuel economy of 19.1 km/l.

The Hyundai Verna 1.4-litre petrol will be available in just two trim levels – E and EX. Features on offer will likely be similar to the corresponding variants of the 1.6-litre lineup. As a result, the Verna 1.4-litre petrol E variant will get power windows, dual airbags, ABS, steel wheels and an MID screen. Meanwhile, the higher EX trim will also get Park Assist with rear camera, front fog lamps, automatic headlamps, impact and speed sensing auto door locks, and keyless entry.

No news is available regarding the relaunch of the smaller 1.4-litre diesel engine for the Verna, though it is highly unlikely to see the light of day anytime soon.
