Maruti Suzuki has added its new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine in the Ertiga MPV. This is the same power plant that made its debut in the Ciaz some months back. The Ertiga 1.5 diesel is currently available in three variants – VDI, ZDI and ZDI+. Prices for the new Ertiga 1.5 start from Rs. 9.86 lakh (ex-showroom, India). It is worth noting that the Ertiga 1.3, with the Fiat-sourced engine, will continue to be on sale for the time being.
The new engine develops 95 hp @ 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 225 Nm @ 1,500 – 2,500 rpm. This block is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox that powers the front wheels. The manufacturer has equipped the engine with a Dual Mass flywheel that helps reduce engine fluctuations. Also, a pendulum type engine mounting improves NVH levels and thus enhances refinement of the powertrain.
The Ertiga is a fairly large and heavy vehicle. As a result, the 1.5-litre diesel engine is not able to deliver as high a fuel economy as it delivers in the Ciaz. While the Ciaz is claimed to extract a fuel economy figure of 26.82 km/l, the Ertiga on the other hand is rated at 24.20 km/l.
It is important to remember here that Maruti Suzuki has already announced its plans to discontinue all diesel models in its lineup by April 2020. As a result, the Ertiga 1.5L too will see its death in under a year from now.
