Hyundai India has launched the all new Santro at prices starting from Rs. 3.90 lakh (ex-showroom, pan India). The car is available in a single engine option, but can be opted with MT as well as AMT automatic gearbox options. Hyundai is also offering a new Santro CNG variant that will further enhance the car’s potential customer base.
The new Hyundai Santro is the latest entrant in the affordable hatchback segment in India. It brings back the popular Santro moniker from the early 2000s, along with some contemporary design elements, modern day features, and a new powertrain. Can this new version manage to repeat its predecessor’s success? We give a breakdown of what the new Hyundai Santro has on offer and try to answer the above question.
Hyundai Santro 2018 price in India
Hyundai was expected to price the Santro quite aggressively, in order to justify the use of the ‘Santro’ moniker. We all know that the previous gen Santro was famous for the value for money that is offered. However, with the new model, Hyundai seems to have taken a different route altogether.
The new Hyundai Santro 2018 is priced in the range of Rs. 3.90 lakh to Rs. 5.46 lakh (ex-showroom, pan India). It is worth noting that these prices are introdutory and will be applicable only for the first 50,000 customers. As a result, we expect to see a price hike of around Rs. 15,000 in a couple of months. However, there are possibilities of some significant discounts in the long term; something that we will try to explain in our upcoming pricing review article of the new Hyundai Santro.
But to give you a brief idea about what we feel about the new Santro’s placement, let’s give you a 2-line opinion. The Santro is clearly overpriced for what it offers. Though it has a lot more features as compared to the Maruti Wagon R, the Tata Tiago is similarly feature loaded and comes with a better exterior design and built quality. It can thus prove to be a major hindrance in the Santro’s path to success. Moreover, the top-end Santro Asta trim is priced very closed to relatively premium products like the Maruti Ignis and Ford Freestyle. This can also potentially be a major cause for concern for the Santro, which ironically is a name that was famous for its affordability in the 2000s.
Following are the ex-showroom variant wise prices of the all new Hyundai Santro.
Variants | |
D-Lite | Rs 3.89 lakh |
Era | Rs 4.24 lakh |
Magna MT | Rs 4.57 lakh |
Magna AMT | Rs 5.18 lakh |
Magna CNG | Rs 5.23 lakh |
Sportz MT | Rs 4.99 lakh |

New Hyundai Santro Specifications – Engine and Gearbox
Engine | 1.1-litre, 4-cylinder petrol |
Power | 68 BHP |
Torque | 99 Nm |
Gearbox | 5-Speed Manual and 5-speed AMT automatic |
Powering the new-gen Hyundai Santro is a 1.1-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine. This power plant develops 68 bhp and a peak torque of 99 Nm. Transmission duties are handled by a 5-speed manual gearbox. There is also a 5-speed AMT automatic gearbox that is on offer in the Magna and Sportz trims. The Santro will thus become Hyundai’s first AMT automatic car in India.
Hyundai is also offering a factory fitted CNG variant with the 2018 Santro. The new Santro CNG will use the same engine as the petrol, but will be able to develop 59 bhp and 84 Nm. Nothing unusual here: CNG isn’t as efficient as petrol in terms of extracting power.
The 1.1-litre engine block of the Santro is clearly smaller than the one found on its biggest rival – the Tata Tiago. However, the presence of an extra cylinder makes it slightly more refined. Additionally, it is also bigger than what powers the current segment leader – the Maruti Wagon R.

New Hyundai Santro mileage
Hyundai claims that the new Santro can cover 20.3 km/l on a single litre of petrol. However, these claims are made as per the car’s performance in ideal conditions. Such conditions are seen regularly on our roads. As a result, it will be safe to assume that the new Hyundai Santro will have a mileage of around 17 km/l.
