After a month of voting, we finally have a winner for the title of ‘the 2017 CarsIndia Car of the Year’ – the Tata Nexon. This latest entrant into the highly competitive compact SUV segment has surely won hearts of the Indian customers, thus winning one of country’s largest publically voted car of the year awards!
For selecting the 2017 CarsIndia Car of the Year, we had started accepting public votes from December 1, 2017. Over the duration of one month, more than 4,200 Indian car lovers locked in their choices. We also reached out to over 40,000 car lovers across various social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in order to spread the word about the award.
We had shortlisted 10 all-new cars that were launched in 2017 for the voting round. These cars were shortlisted based on how major the update was and the potential impact it can have on the manufacturer itself, the market as well as the immediate segment. The ten cars that made it to our final list were – Tata Tigor, New Maruti Dzire, Tata Hexa, Maruti Ignis, Jeep Compass, Tata Nexon, Honda WR-V, Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda Kodiaq, and New Hyundai Verna.

The Tata Nexon received the title of the 2017 CarsIndia Car of the Year by receiving 37.5% votes. Interestingly, the first runner-up is also from the same stable – the Tata Hexa, which earned 24.9% votes in total. The third spot was occupied by the Jeep Compass, with 15% votes.
The Nexon’s win is a clear example of how Indian customers are willing to accept a great product, regardless of which manufacturer it comes from. While we all know the popularity that Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai enjoy in the Indian market, the votes for 2017 CarsIndia Car of the Year indicate that even less popular carmakers can win the heart of Indian customers, provided they come with well-packaged products.
The Tata Nexon is one of the, if not the, most stylish and contemporary products on offer in the compact SUV segment. Its modern design and well-loaded feature list is surely attracting people to Tata showrooms across the country. Moreover, with the fun to drive engine options (1.2-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre turbo diesel), the Nexon is also an appealing proposition for the growing number of auto enthusiasts in the country.

The only flaw in the Nexon’s package is the missing automatic transmission option. But as far as rumours are concerned, Tata is already working on a Nexon AMT automatic variant. More details can be found at this link.
Hence, the Tata Nexon surely deserves every vote it has received. And with around 4,000 units monthly sales, the car is surely on its way to provide a tough competition to the likes of the Maruti Vitara Brezza and Ford EcoSport.
