New Maruti Dzire 2017 collides with Tata Safari – Our accident analysis!

Maruti Suzuki will be launching the highly awaited new-gen Dzire in India on May 16, 2017. Even ahead of its official launch, the new Dzire has been involved in a horrific accident with a Tata Safari Storme.

Images of the crash between the Dzire and Safari have surfaced on the Internet, showcasing some serious damage on both cars. Media reports suggest that the accident took place near Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. It is being said that the Safari lost control while overtaking the Dzire. This caused it to hit the divider of the highway and then bounce back onto the side profile of the yet to be launched compact sedan.

The images clearly show a mangled side of the new Dzire 2017 due to the accident. The complete driver side area has been crushed due to the impact with the 2-ton SUV. The roof, as well as the A and B-pillars, seem to have been deformed. This can be termed as an alarming situation for a car. For those of you who aren’t aware of the construction of a car’s chassis, the pillars are the most important part of a car’s safety architecture as they suffer the largest amount of stress while cornering as well as during an accident, due to rapid deceleration. As a result, automaker try to strengthen the pillars to avoid them from bending in case of a collision, thus keeping the passenger cabin intact.

However, does this mean that the new Maruti Dzire 2017 will suffer in the safety department? To be honest, it is a bit hard to judge from a single accident. Moreover, since we don’t really know the exact reason and circumstances of the mishap, it is impossible to deduce that the car has a weaker structure. The bend in the pillars can be due to a rollover or the fact that the Safari jumped a bit from the median to hit the Dzire, resulting in a higher point of collision. In such cases, the pillars will easily bend and can result in a structure that is visible in the images.

Hence, we will still wait for the official crash test reports of the new Maruti Dzire 2017, before making a jurisdiction. We were the first ones to applaud Maruti Suzuki for offering standard ABS and dual airbags on all its new cars. However, if the automaker is found to be cost saving on the structural integrity of the vehicle, airbags and ABS will become useless.
