Maruti Suzuki has launched the new-gen Swift hatchback for the Indian market at prices starting from Rs. 4.99 lakh for the petrol range and Rs. 5.99 lakh for the diesel models. The top-end variants of the petrol and diesel range have been pegged at Rs. 7.29 lakh and Rs. 8.29 lakh, respectively (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi). The new Maruti Swift 2018 has already received over 40,000 pre-launch bookings. The waiting period for the hatchback is thus expected to be over 2 months in the near future.

The new-gen Swift is built on an all-new platform called HEARTECT. This new chassis has been designed to be stiffer, agiler and a lot lighter than the current model’s chassis. This has deliberately been done to enhance the car’s fun-to-drive factor. In fact, Maruti Suzuki has claimed that the new Swift has extremely sporty dynamics.
The updated model is available in India in a total of 12 variants. These include 4 trims: LXi/LDi, VXi/VDi, ZXi/ZDi and ZXi+/ZDi+. While a 5-speed manual gearbox is available as standard on all 4 trims, the mid-level V and Z trims also get an AMT automatic gerbox. Hence, these translate to 6 diesel and 6 petrol variants of the new Swift.

The Swift has been a leader in its segment for around a decade. But since the current model has been present in the market for quite a time, sales of the Maruti Swift have been declining continuously. In the past few months, the Hyundai Grand i10 sold around 500 units more than the Swift. However, once the new Maruti Swift 2018 is launched, the car will likely manage to regain is position in the top 3 monthly grocers.

Maruti Suzuki hasn’t is known for providing cars at competitive prices. The new Swift is no exception to this tendency. Hence, despite getting huge mechanical and cosmetic changes, the 2018 Maruti Swift has been launched at a very minor premium over its predecessor. The petrol range of the new Swift is priced from Rs. 4.99 lakh to Rs. 7.29 lakh, while the diesel models are pegged between Rs. 5.99 lakh to 8.29 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Maruti Swift 2018 Specifications
This might come out as a downer for a few. The new Maruti Swift continues to be powered by the same set of engines that we have seen on about 10 Maruti cars till date – the 1.2-litre, four-cylinder K-series petrol, and the 1.3-litre four-cylinder DDiS diesel. While we seriously have no complaints from these engines, Maruti should have invested in a new powertrain setup for the new Swift, given the popularity of this car. We have often said, the launch of a new Swift in India creates a hype that is similar to what happens when a new iPhone is introduced. Hence, it would have been great to see some innovation from the automaker in the engine department.

Maruti is known for its fuel-economy-friendly cars, and the new Swift won’t be an exception. Expect the petrol model to deliver around 20 km/l while the diesel will manage around 24 km/l. These high economy figures are also a result of the weight saving achieved by Suzuki engineers on the new HEARTECT platform.

Suzuki designers have fabricated the new Swift very intelligently. Though it gets a completely fresh design, it still manages to retain the quintessential Swift character. This will help the company to build on the popularity of the old Swift, while giving customers a new package.
Up front, the new Maruti Swift 2018 comes with a wide frameless grille with horizontal slats. The grille is flanked on either side by new headlamps that house LED projectors and DRLs (daytime running lights). The bumper comes with circular fog lamps, surrounded by black housings, which extend on the lower end to integrate with the air dam. Interestingly, the use of chrome is minimum on the new Swift. This has been done to give it a sporty character, and we like it very much.
The side profile of the Maruti Swift 2018 features a Swift-like silhouette, though it has been made sharper. The A and B pillars are blacked out, further intensifying its Swift-ness, while the C-pillar too gets a small black area to give the car a floating roof effect. Interestingly, the rear door handle is housed behind the rear window, similar to the arrangement seen on the Chevy Beat and Mahindra KUV100.
At the rear, the new 2018 Swift comes with a bloated tailgate, larger taillights that have been pushed to the extreme corners and a large bumper area that is also home to the number plate housing. Interestingly, the spotted model only has the Swift branding at the rear, which is in-line to Maruti’s branding for its Nexa-based cars. Cars that are sold through regular Maruti dealerships currently have the Maruti Suzuki and variant badging as well.
Maruti Swift 2018 Interiors
The new Maruti Swift gets an all-black cabin. The dashboard looks similar to that of the new Dzire, but gets circular air vents and silver design accents. The flat bottom steering wheel is a straight lift from the Dzire, though the faux wood inserts are replaced by silver detailing. The two-pod instrument cluster also remains unchanged, while the door panels too are similar to that of the Dzire, albeit in an all black layout.
Features on offer with the new Maruti Swift 2018 include a touchscreen infotainment system, a driver-side-tilted centre console, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and rear view camera support. The lower models get a regular 2-DIN music system.
Cabin space inside the new Swift has seen an increment, thanks to the increased width and wheelbase. Moreover, the HEARTECT platform is designed to minimise the engine bay area. As a result, the rear seat occupants of the new Swift now get much better legroom and headroom, as compared to the previous model

2018 Maruti Swift Safety
The new Maruti Swift is built on the HEARTECT platform, which is engineered to offer better protection to occupants in case of a crash. Moreover, Maruti Suzuki is offering multiple safety features as standard with the new 2018 Swift. Maruti Swift 2018
The new Maruti Swift 2018 successfully manages to redefine its overall styling, while retaining the quintessential Swift character. The exterior and interior design looks good while the overall quality of plastics has also been improved. Presence of a touchscreen infotainment system and LED projector headlights with DRLs confirms that Maruti has loaded the car well. However, the same engine options are indeed a turn off. The petrol is still great unit to drive, but the diesel is starting to show signs of age and thus spoils the overall package.
