Tata HBX dimensions – How big it actually is?

Tata HBX is currently the most-awaited launch from the Indian carmaker. There has been a significant customer interest in the HBX, ever since it was first unveiled during the 2020 Auto Expo. Customers are more interested in the Tata HBX because of it offering an SUV form-factor at an affordable price.

Pulling off a SUV form factor in the small car segment is a difficult job. We have seen carmakers fail at this in the past. Look at the Maruti S Presso, which is marketed as a micro SUV but looks like a matchbox due to its disproportionate dimensions and plain sheet metal. As a result, a lot of Indian small car buyers are interested to know the size of the Tata HBX in order to see whether this upcoming car from Tata Motors indeed justifies the SUV tag or not.

The Tata HBX is 3,840 mm in length, 1,822 mm in width, and 1,635 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,450 mm. With these dimensions, the HBX is the smallest Tata SUV on sale in India. To give some context, let us compare the Tata HBX dimensions with that of some other cars.

Tata HBX Dimensions vs Tiago vs Swift

All figures are in mm Tata HBX Tata Tiago Maruti Swift
Length 3,840 3,765 3,840
Width 1,822 1,677 1,735
Height 1,635 1,535 1,530
Wheelbase 2,450 2,400 2,450

The above table shows that the Tata HBX is significantly bigger in all dimensions as compared to the Tata Tiago. It is worth noting that the HBX will be slotted above the Tiago in Tata’s car portfolio in India. As a result, this size increment of the HBX over its hatchback sibling is obvious.

An interesting point to note in the size comparison table above is that the Tata HBX has the exact same length and wheelbase of the Maruti Swift. However, it is significantly taller and wider than the Maruti hatchback. This size comparison gives us a decent idea about how the HBX will shape up on the road.

With a larger width, we expect the Tata HBX to be more spacious on the inside. It will most likely be a comfortable fit for 3 passengers on the rear bench. Meanwhile, the larger height will surely help in giving the HBX an SUVish appeal.

It is important to note here that though the HBX is in the same size bracket as most hatchbacks, Tata designers, led by the very talented Pratap Bose, have managed to make the body panels chiseled enough to add dynamism and a bit of macho to the vehicle’s character. This is done by significant sculpting around the wheel arches, a higher bonnet line, and a balanced use of black plastic cladding, faux skid plates, and bulky bumpers. All this helps the Tata HBX look a lot more SUV-like than it actually is.

The Tata HBX is expected to be launched in India later this year. It is expected to be priced in the range of Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 8 lakh (ex-showroom).
