Tata Motors has officially launched the much-awaited AMT automatic variant for the Nexon compact SUV in the Indian market. It is available only in the top-end XZ+ variant but comes with both petrol and diesel options. The Tata Nexon AMT automatic has been priced at Rs. 9.41 lakh for the petrol model and Rs. 10.39 lakh for the diesel version. (All prices ex-showroom, Delih).
The Nexon automatic gets a 6-speed AMT automatic gearbox. The automatic variants continue to be offered with the 3 driving modes (City, Eco and Sport), which are available in the manual transmission models.
While the overall design of the Nexon AMT automatic remains unchanged, Tata has introduced a new dual-tone colour scheme – orange and silver, exclusively for the automatic gearbox variants. As mentioned above, the Tata Nexon automatic is available only in the top-end XZA+ variant, based on the XZ+ trim. It thus gets features like projector headlamps, LED DRLs, 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and navigation, 16-inch alloys, and automatic climate control.
The Tata Nexon was earlier spotted with an AMT gearbox on camera. This was the first verification of the fact that the Nexon will soon get an AMT gearbox in the automatic variant.
At the moment, the leader of the compact SUV segment – the Maruti Vitara Brezza, doesn’t get an automatic gearbox. However, the second most-popular product in the market – the Ford EcoSport, is already being offered with an automatic option, which is a fairly popular variant amongst buyers. Maruti too is planning to launch the Vitara Brezza automatic by the end of this year.

This shows that manufacturers have clearly realized that the demand for automatic gearbox variants is on the rise. Maruti has itself recorded an increase of over 50% in the demand of AMT models in its portfolio in the past 1 year. Tata too acknowledges that the absence of an automatic variant might be a loophole in the Nexon’s package. Hence, the Tata Nexon AMT has been introduced to expand the target audience.
Tata Nexon AMT automatic specifications
The Tata Nexon automatic comes with both petrol and diesel engine options, mated to an AMT gearbox. With a lower initial cost and higher fuel economy, AMT automatic gearboxes have become increasingly popular in the Indian market.
The petrol gets a 1.2-litre turbocharged powerplant while the diesel continues to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbo unit. Power and torque output figures are similar to what’s seen on the manual varaints.

Tata Motors has priced the Nexon AMT automatic petrol at Rs. 9,41,350, while the Nexon AMT automatic diesel is pegged at Rs. 10,38,830. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.
